Week 2: Pizza Pizza Pizza!

This past week was such a fun unit! The students loved talking about, reading about, and singing about pizza! We counted toppings for art, we made pizza's with play-doh and some students even delivered pizza's to office members.  Due to a security feature that was updated on my class Ipad, I am unable to retrieve my great photos from the week to share. I hope this issue gets resolved quickly so I can share both online and via Email asap!

On Thursday, we joined in a celebration of learning and got a chance to see some of our local fire staff. Students were also allowed to climb in and explore a firetruck and ambulance. It was such a fun experience (Photo's to come fingers crossed).
Since we joined in on the Elementary fun on Thursday we did not have time to actually make our pizza snack like I had planned so that will be back on the lesson plan for Monday. After that we will be starting to explore the Ice Cream shop, Baseball field and maybe fit in a bit of the pond!

Half way through ESY, it goes so quick!

Week One: Getting to know the group!

The exciting thing about summer is that students are not always matched with their regular school year teacher, peers and para professionals. It can be extremely hard for a team who has never met a child to place them with appropriate peers during summer school. So, I welcome all of the new families and support staff to the yellow room! This summer I have 8 students 6 have had be as a teacher, and 2 are getting to know me as I am getting to know them. Even though I have had most of the students week one is still about getting to know each other, children in preschool can make such significant changes in a small amount of time so a month away means a month of changes.  So after I got to know my kiddos my schedule needed some fixing. Typically, my students attend school for 2.5 hours, but in the summer we attend during the same times are the other Elementary students, 4 Hours. Yikes! I know, it is an adjustment for everyone, but surprisingly with a well crafted schedules in place and strategically planned outside and snack times, most of the students make it through the day with only minor meltdowns.

What we were up to.....

Well, other than just getting to know each other, the students enjoyed exploring the new classroom layout, and the community helper toys. The boys spent most of their choice time playing with police cars, firetrucks, ambulances and the coveted school bus a preschool boys favorite toy.  This school bus has given me many opportunities to teach our social emotion curriculum on turn taking and calm down strategies over the years. I did cave and there are more school buses available, but not too many I would not want rid my classroom of those enjoyable teachable moments.

Another favorite of the week; The Pizza Song, I have been signing the pizza song in my car, sleep and to my son at bedtime. Our summer curriculum, is piggy backing on a theme that we actual touch on every year in our preschool program which means, I am putting a little extra focus on the community places as opposed to people. Since the pizza song was such a hit and I assume everyone LOVES pizza this weekend I transformed
